Eco tip: Recycling and repairing

Recycling and repairing

Twenty years ago it was suggested that manufacturers move from ‘cradle to grave’ to ‘cradle to cradle’: don’t make something short-lived and hard to repair that ends in a tip, but plan for easy repairs and recovery of components for reuse when it expires. There has been little progress, but help is available for DIY repairs. Espares sells parts for many household goods, with repair videos and product manuals on its website. At Restart Project sessions attendees teach each other to repair many electrical items, and Yourfix repairs phones and laptops and runs short training courses.

Why not come to St Mary’s Repair Shop on Thursday 26 September from 4-8pm? Repair specialists from around Islington will help people fix items including clothes, bicycles, computers and furniture. The event will help people save money, reduce waste, and extend the life of their belongings.

The St Mary’s weekly newsletter features regular eco tips.
