Food Action Waste Week 2023
This week is 'Food Action Waste' week and the theme is 'Win. Don't Bin'. It will demonstrate how valuable food is in our lives, how it unites people and how using up everything we buy saves money, time and the planet. Below are some interesting food waste facts:
Each year around 6 million tonnes of food is thrown out.
If we recycled all food waste in the UK, the impact would be the same as planting 200 million trees
The carbon footprint of waste in the UK is equal to 20% of all cars on UK roads
Because of the serious impact that food waste has on our environment we want to encourage families to take part in food action waste week. The Love Food, Hate Waste website has a great survey which can be completed and at the end. The aim is to help you make more of the food you already have; helping you save time and money. Top Tips from Love Food, Hate Waste.
We have some tips below and you can find even more on the Love Food Hate Waste website (opens in a new tab) so you can get involved and help our planet.
Plan before you buy. Check what is left in the cupboards and fridge before you go shopping so you are only buying what you need.
Make sure you’re storing food correctly. Check your fridge is at the correct temperature with the Chill the Fridge Out temperature checker (opens in a new tab) on Love Food Hate Waste. Foods will last longer if they are kept at under 5°C.
Check what you can freeze! Your freezer is your best friend when it comes to reducing food waste. Love Food Hate Waste have all the info on what you can freeze and how to defrost safely on their Food Waste Action Week page (opens in a new tab).
Use up leftovers in other recipes to reduce wasted food – check Love Food Hate Waste’s leftover recipes (opens in a new tab) to see if you fancy trying something new.
