Eco tip: Vinegar

Eco tip: Vinegar

About 120,000 chemicals, mostly recent inventions, are polluting the environment. Some come from trigger-spray bottles of household cleaners.

Vinegar is natural, made by fermen-ting weak alcohol such as wine, and known for millennia – Christ was offered it on the Cross.

White or malt vinegar is good for household cleaning and cheaper: half-fill your spray bottle and top it up with water. It can also clean copper, as on cooking pans, if you add a pinch of salt: vinegar (acetic acid) is a weak acid and the salt makes it a bit stronger.

The St Mary’s weekly newsletter features regular eco tips.
