Black History Month: Reclaiming Narratives

Learning about Caribbean culture and cooking.

October 2024 is Black History Month. Read on to find out how our children and young people celebrated and learned about black achievements.

To celebrate Black History month, St Mary’s Church has been working closely with children and young people to raise awareness about the importance of black history and culture in the UK. This includes working with our local primary school to educate and inform children of all backgrounds about black achievements through collective worship.

At St Mary’s Church our youth club got to learn about Caribbean culture and even got a lesson as to how Jerk Chicken is cooked and prepared by one of congregation members. They also got to take some home to eat, along with some sweet and sour chicken.

As a church we want to continue to shed a light on black history and culture not just to children and young people but to all who attend St Mary’s Church.
