St Mary's Weekly Eco Tip: Save the Bees
Wild bees are seriously threatened everywhere by pollution and insecticides. The greatest threat to wild pollinators in the inner city is an excess of honeybees. London, and other cities, have a hive density eight times higher than the rest of the country. A few years ago bees swarmed in Victoria St., near Westminster Abbey: within 20 minutes eight beekeepers had arrived. Inner cities are friendly to pollinators, because of the wide variety of habitats and flowering plants. But domesticated bees outcompete them for nectar, causing populations to drop sharply, and they don’t do much pollination.
You can help the bees by planting bee friendly seeds such as Borage, Cornflower and Echium.
