Gospel of Luke in 2025 at St Mary’s
We are studying the Gospel of Luke throughout 2025. Luke emphasises God’s love for the poor, the ministry and power of the Holy Spirit, and the unity of the Church. We are expectant as to how God will use this gospel to challenge and change us, as a community and as individuals.
NT Wright says of Luke: “Luke as a historian, inhabited the worlds of both Judaism and Hellenism. As a theologian, he remained firmly Jewish while claiming to address the world of paganism from the perspective of creational monotheism, as one who knows what a sphere is can understand what a circle is; and that, if one was called by the creator god to a task vis-à-vis the pagan world, one could accomplish that task by subverting the world’s story with the true Jewish one. That, I suggest, is precisely what Luke has done.”
If you want to learn more about Luke you can check out the BibleProject overview.
We can also recommend Matthew Croasmum and Miroslav Volf’s The Hunger for Home: Food and Meals in the Gospel of Luke which highlights connections between Luke’s message and our vision of Calling Islington Home.
Among other things they underline the importance of eating together.
We will seek to follow their advice this year!
